Ghosts in the Page: An Interface Experiment

As part of the final project for INF2331: The Future of the Book, I constructed this prototype site, which combines elements of TEI-encoded XML of Mark Twain’s autobiography (from the Mark Twain Project) with jQuery and CSS/HTML that alters the visibility of comments and annotations to fade out over time. The result is a constantly shifting text, requiring user intervention to maintain the view of the work originally presented.

The imperfect results of the combination of jQuery and the Document Object Model with the XML encoded text reveal conflicts and problems of overlapping hierarchies when rendered in the browser.
